Cities like Paris and New York, for example, or the canals of Venice are at the top of many people’s travel bucket lists — but they hardly fall into the category of “budget international travel.” Thanks to their thriving tourism industries, and unfortunately for thrifty travelers, trips to these destinations can cost a pretty penny.

Luckily, the world is full of places you could explore without the lofty price tag that are just as thrilling, unique and culturally rich. For fractions of the cost, you can experience a European vacation replete with history and cultural significance. Or you can revel in the luxurious tropical beaches of the Caribbean without paying through the nose for upscale resorts.

By selecting the right destination, you can get more out of your travel dollars and broaden your horizons at the same time. Here are a few budget international travel destinations recommended by those in the know.

European Destinations to Discover

Albania: Albania seems to have a little bit of everything any traveler could desire: 300 miles of Mediterranean coastline, picturesque mountain ranges and a burgeoning foodie scene. (Also, we just learned that the Albanian Alps are also known as “the Accursed Mountains,” which for some reason only heightens the appeal.) Since this small but magical country is still a bit under the radar as a tourist destination, there’s room to discover Balkan and Albanian culture on your budget international travel list. As travel writer Caitlin Morton wrote in Condé Nast Traveler’s “19 Cheap Places to Travel in 2025,” in Albania you can “live out your European mountainside dreams at half the price.”

North Macedonia: In a separate Condé Nast Traveler article, Ohrid in North Macedonia was ranked one of Europe’s most epically underrated cities. Elise Morton, travel writer and former Eastern Europe commissioning editor for Culture Trip, wrote: “We all know the Balkans are home to some stunning seaside spots, but we shouldn’t forget about the region’s lakes! […] The eponymous city of Ohrid on the North Macedonian shore is the perfect base for a lakeside break that combines sweetwater swimming and sunbathing with awe-inspiring nature (the lake is often referred to as the ‘European Galapagos,’ thanks to its dense biodiversity) and Byzantine religious history and architecture.”

Central and South American Destinations

Barranquilla, Colombia: Barranquilla is located on Colombia’s northern coast and offers year-round warm weather and an array of stunning beaches. The city is most famous for hosting the Carnival of Barranquilla, the world’s biggest carnival celebration and a UNESCO-recognized Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. As reported recently in USA Today, travelers can now enjoy a 19% discount on airfare to this unsung destination.

Belize: Belize is a destination that will truly give you the most bang for your buck, according to discount travel website BetterRoaming. The current 2-to-1 conversion rate between the Belize dollar (BZD) and the U.S. dollar will make your money go further without needing to whip out a calculator for every transaction — and because Belize uses our money interchangeably with theirs, you don’t need to convert any currency, either. Belize also offers all kinds of travel experiences. With world-famous archeological sites, rainforests, reefs and a thriving culinary scene, it also has a subtropical climate that keeps it warm year-round. That means that December and January are great times for budget international travel, allowing you to enjoy sunny weather and warm sands while saving money on cheaper flights. (As an added perk, Belize’s national language is English, which makes it easier for non-Spanish speakers to navigate.)

Brazil: Rio de Janeiro is perhaps the most obvious place to explore in Brazil, with world-famous restaurants and some of the best beaches this planet has to offer. I can attest through personal experience, however, that more people should try to see São Paulo, a vibrant city filled with hip art galleries, museums and local eateries, or Foz de Iguaçu if you want to see nature at its most incredible.

Asian Destinations

Cambodia: Discount travel site BetterRoaming claims that Cambodia is one of the most affordable Asian countries to visit, thanks to lower-than-average day-to-day expenses and accommodations. And just this year, Cambodia’s e-visa program — which allows prospective visitors to skip a lot of the bureaucratic hassle of traditional visa applications — lowered its tourist visa fees by around 17%. Condé Nast Traveler claims that first-time visitors can’t go wrong landing in the recently opened Seam Reap Angkor International Airport (SIA), making access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat even easier, along with the area’s festive bars, vibrant cultural experiences and French-style colonial streets.

Vietnam: Condé Nast Traveler listed the Vietnamese cities of Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City as some of the best places to go in 2025 for their celebrations commemorating the country’s national reunification. But they also want tourists to know that Vietnam is a country worth visiting for its “mind-blowing beauty” that can be toured for low prices, thanks to the favorable currency exchange rate. The official Vietnam tourist site claims that Hanoi is the most “romantic” city in the region, but it also recommends going a bit further afield to see beautiful Ninh Binh and the island of Phu Quoc for their pristine beaches and intimate resorts without all the tourists.

African Destinations

Madagascar: As Condé Nast Traveller put it: Visit Madagascar to “get the full experience of an Indian Ocean retreat without the Maldives prices.” It’s included in the magazine’s “19 Cheap Places to Travel in 2025,” and they recommend staying at the Namoroka Tsingy Camp with its seven luxury safari tents inside “the essentially unvisited” Tsingy de Namoroka National Park. (The words “luxury” and “tent” don’t really go together in our book, but perhaps that’s what makes this place affordable?)

Marrakesh, Morocco: The discount travel company Dollar Flight Club rates Marrakesh, Morocco as one of the top three least expensive places to fly internationally in 2025. Offering an intoxicating blend of history, culture and sensory delights, Marrakesh is a captivating location that just begs to be explored. It’s also, according to the company, one of the cheapest travel destinations in North Africa. (Although we did some digging, and while savvy travelers can fiddle with dates to score some incredibly low prices, most of the nonstop flights — like the ones from Newark, New Jersey — still carry a hefty price tag.)

Kenya: Highly geographically diverse, the Kenyan landscape encompasses mountains, savannahs, rainforests and miles of pristine beaches. Better yet, Kenya’s developed tourist economy means that budget accommodation and transport to popular destinations like the coastal city of Mombasa or the Masai Mara National Reserve are both easy to arrange and easy on the wallet, according to BetterRoaming. As a tropical country, Kenya remains warm all year, making it a great-value option for an off-peak winter or autumn vacation. Prices on both flights and accommodations drop during these periods to balance out the lowered tourist demand.

Caribbean Destination

Jamaica: This friendly island known for its convivial hospitality is routinely voted one of the best-value options for a vacation in the Caribbean, according to BetterRoaming. The prices of hotel rooms, meals and drinks are, on average, lower than fellow Caribbean islands like Barbados or the Bahamas, making Jamaica a beach destination you might actually be able to afford.
