A joy prescription makes a lot more sense than a drug prescription, don’t you think?
We’re living longer; that’s a fact. But are we living better, with more purpose and, perhaps just as importantly, more fun?
We took a deep dive into what that means in this issue, and it got me thinking about my own sense of purpose. I’m not sure travel really qualifies as a purpose, but it sure is fun. And for me, it has become an important part of living well.
I was reminded of that on a recent trip to Nice, France, despite the constant high temps. There’s something about getting away from your everyday routine that wakes you up a little. Suddenly, you notice things again. You linger over lunch. You walk, without worrying about how many steps you’re getting in. You sit with a glass of wine and watch the world go by without feeling like you should be doing something more productive.
And the French, especially in the South of France, seem to have made an art of it.
Nice gave me a chance to slow down, wander, eat incredibly well, take in that almost impossibly blue Mediterranean, and simply enjoy where I was.
It reminded me that maybe “purpose” doesn’t always have to mean accomplishing something. Maybe part of living with purpose is making room for curiosity, connection, new experiences and things that bring us joy.
Maybe that’s the best prescription of all.
